The Ugly Duckling

Although they are fellow "Canadians", it seems like people will never accept the Vancouver Canucks as a Canadian team. Over the years, people tend to cheer for all the American teams to beat them out of the playoffs, even though I feel as do many others that the Canucks are Canada's only hope of bringing the cup north back to where it belongs. Many skeptics believe that the Bertuzzi incident really gave the entire Canucks franchise a horrible reputation. Bertuzzi hit Colorado's player, Steve Moore from behind in retaliation for an earlier hit by Moore against Bertuzzi teammate Markus Naslund.

The Vancouver riots made it worse to some extent, it was a public disturbance that broke out in the downtown core of Vancouver on Wednesday, June 15, 2011. The riots happened immediately after the conclusion of the Boston Bruins' win over the Vancouver Canucks in game seven of the Stanley Cup Finals. This was a repeat of the 1994 riot where a riot arose after Game 7 of the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals in which the Vancouver Canucks lost to the New York Rangers. Even with all these events, people should still cheer for our best hope. In this season disappointments have come from Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and the Montreal teams who all failed to deliver this season. Although Ottawa has its chances, analysts and sports enthusiast will agree that the Nuck's are our best hope of bring the cup north.

Another problem comes with the nationality of some of the players, and the twins who play for the team. Although their are barley any actual "Canadians" of the roster, they are still a CANADIAN team and without them, we can expect another American team to win, sine we haven't seen the cup since 1993.

In the end, we must support our fellow teams and join them in the road to the cup.

  1. Vancouver does not play hockey like a Canadian team so they should not be expected to be treated as such. From the constant complaining to the referees, the dirty plays and the reputations of some of their players, I have a hard time even respecting them as a team in the NHL. A large majority of their fan base is classless as well, as resembled in the riots last year. Also, events such as using laser pointers to distract opposing goalies is disrespectful. It does not matter that they are located in Canada, I will never cheer for them against any team.

  2. The thing about the riots was that more than half the people who were caught claimed they they did it for fun and did not even cheer for Vancouver at all, they did it just to have fun. That's your personal preference, but I bet you cheer or enjoy watching Crosby play, and look at how he acts now that he has the law of the referees on his side. NHL is about out smarting the refs and the other team, nobody does that better than the Canucks, i'm an Oiler's fan myself, but we need the cup in Canada, and until other teams can step up, Canucks get my vote.

  3. I'm actually not a Crosby fan just so you know. I enjoy a good hockey player regardless of nationality, whether it's the smooth hands of Pavel Dastyuk or the power of a forward such as Jarome Iginla. Also, I disagree with you saying that NHL is outsmarting the refs, as the more skilled hockey team is still more likely to win. Either way don't expect the Canucks to go any further than the conference finals.

  4. In all reality, sports have become politics, people do whatever they have to do to win, no one can say that the Canucks are not a good team, they have some of the best records and best special teams. I can understand the dislike, but people need to ease up and realize hockey has changed and so must the perception on the players.
